Finding “Stuff”, part 2a
Real Estate Assessment Data and Tennessee Property Viewer
Probably the site I use the most from my start page is the link “Tax Data“. From there, I can get owner information from most counties in Tennessee. (Bradley, Davidson, Hamilton, Knox, Montgomery, Rutherford, Shelby, Sumner, and Williamson counties are available through their own sites).
On the start page, you can click on the appropriate county (or select it from a list). At the bottom of this page, you can gain access to the counties that are not available through this state page.
Once you choose your county, you be directed to another page where you enter data to search for the property in question.
Here you can enter various data to find your parcel. Enter only the minimum necessary as too much data can fail to return a search. All information searched for is exact. If you search for Howell Timothy, and my property is listed under Howell Tim, you will not find it. If you look for Howell T, you would find me and Tom and Thomas and and and… But, at least, you would find me.
Search Options
- Owner Name: Entered in reverse order with no punctuation. “Smith Thomas C”
- Property Address: Entered as name then type then direction (sometimes) followed by the street number. “Rhoten St W 724” unfortunately, more often than not, the number isn’t searchable. Depending on how the entry was listed, it might be on Rhoten St or just Rhoten.
- Parcel ID:
- Control Map: Entered as 3 digits and a letter (if so needed) “004N” or “118” or “014” it is not case sensitive.
- Group: a single letter not case sensitive if your parcel has one.
- Parcel: entered with 5 digits and a decimal place “127.03” or “020.00”
- Subdivision Name: this is not case sensitive but is subject to abbreviations. “Smoky Mtn Est” for Smoky Mountain Estate perhaps.
- Classification: I never change it, just leave it as ALL CLASSES
- Sale Date: I don’t use it, your on your own on that one.
- Sort Selection Type: Often it is beneficial to sort by other than the owner, choose your preference here.
Less is more when searching. If it returns too many results to fumble through, you can go back to this page to narrow down your search.
Results
Here is a search for “Howell” as an owner in Jefferson County. As you can see, there are only 14 listings. Were I to search for “Ogle” or “Whaley” in Sevier County, I might still be waiting for the list to compile.
To see the tax information along with improvements, deed references, subdivision information, etc – Click on the Radio Button to the left of the listing. If you want to see the GIS map of the property, click on map. (There is also a link to the map at the bottom of the information page the radio button takes you to.)
The listing can be printed for future reference. Unfortunately, the URL on the listing is not static and forwarding it to another person only delivers them a bad link and redirects them to the front page of the Real Estate Assessment Data.
If you find that you have a LOT of information to sift through by using a name or street name, you can use the <ctrl> F (find) function to locate an address or specific name or lot number, etc.
I will cover the GIS usage in an upcoming post.
