slope
Surveying
This is the ratio of vertical change divided by the horizontal distance and is typically expressed as “percent slope”. So if a hill has 30 vertical feet of change and is 127 feet long, then the slope is 23.6%. (30 ÷ 127 = .23622 | converted to a percent = .23622 x 100 = 23.6%)
Merriam-Webster
2: upward or downward slant or inclination or degree of slant
Encyclopedia Britannica (mathematics)
“Numerical measure of a line’s inclination relative to the horizontal. In analytic geometry, the slope of any line, ray, or line segment is the ratio of the vertical to the horizontal distance between any two points on it (“slope equals rise over run”).”
