Free Advice
The other day, I had a meeting with a couple over what they could do with their land. As it turned out, it was going to be way too difficult to mess with splitting it up. What I realized through all of this is that I give free advice.
Every since I got my license, I have been doling out advice. I have always taken the notion that what I have in my head is free to give because what I sell is my signature. No matter what I tell people and how I advise them, when it all comes down to it, I have a physical product.
Unlike attorneys, I do have something tangible to sell. I sell surveys. I sell my services locating and setting corners. I sell preliminaries and subdivisions, site plans and elevation certificates. I don’t sell land advice, that I give away.
I feel that I have a tiny bit of knowledge in this balding head of mine and the best thing I can do with it is pass it on. There is no reason not to impart some wisdom where it is needed instead of remaining closed lipped and keep people in the dark.
The average person’s eyes glaze over when you start talking trigonometry and statistics. If I were ever to think that I was demystifying land surveying too much, that is all I have to do. Start talking about the math of it.
I have known several attorneys who also understood this concept. The understanding that their letterhead and signature was more valuable then the knowledge locked in their head. I believe that it makes for a better relationship with the clients and the public at large.
So, after all this rambling, I again state; One of the most popular services that I offer is free advice.
